New Tariffs Favor ‘Beating China’ Over Decarbonization

The Biden Administration announced extensive new tariffs on Chinese goods yesterday, targeting cleantech industries China dominates—which also happen to be critical to the green energy transition.

The move represents President Joe Biden’s election-year decision to limit U.S. market access for companies from China, a country he and his electoral opponent will both try to convince voters they can be “tough on.”

In the process, he has ceded ground from another, more important objective: advancing decarbonization and turning the United States into a global leader on climate change mitigation efforts.
